Start with a worthwhile question

Develop a clear argument about a current or enduring question. Aim for intellectual substance, accessible prose and a distinctive contribution. A short proposal or a complete essay may be considered.

Apply consistent standards

Nonpartisan inquiry means applying the same evidentiary standards across parties, institutions and viewpoints. Public policy and controversial questions are welcome. Represent serious opposing arguments fairly and state uncertainty plainly.

Show the research

Support factual claims with credible, traceable sources. Link or number citations, check quotations and statistics against their sources, and distinguish evidence from interpretation. Do not invent sources, quotations, findings or credentials.

AI assistance is acceptable

AI may assist research, outlining, writing, translation or editing. Disclose material assistance to the editor, including the tools used and the tasks performed. The named author must verify every claim and citation and take responsibility for the final work.

Critique with factual fairness

Critique ideas, policies, institutions and documented conduct. Do not submit harassment, personal disparagement, discriminatory abuse, unsupported allegations or defamatory statements. A strong argument does not require a personal attack.

Be clear about authorship and rights

Identify the author and any coauthors. Disclose relevant conflicts, funding, prior publication and simultaneous submissions. Submit only text and images you have the right to offer.

Publication permissions, attribution and any exclusivity must be agreed separately before acceptance. Sending a submission alone does not transfer ownership or create a publication agreement.

Expect editorial review

Include a concise summary, source links, a short biography and any required disclosures. Editors may fact-check, seek clarification, request revisions or decline a piece. Substantive edits and publication terms should be confirmed with the author before publication.

Authors should promptly report material errors after publication. Read our approach to corrections.

Private editorial review

Submit your essay

Send a complete essay or a developed proposal. We review the work before publication; receipt is not acceptance. Fields marked “required” must be completed.
